This poster will analyse the work of the TISSNTE project (Teacher Induction: Supporting the Supporters of Novice Teachers in Europe) funded by the EU. The importance of the induction and support of new teachers to the profession is being increasingly recognised as a means of attracting and retaining teachers and of raising the standard of teaching and learning in schools. In several European countries, teachers, often given the title of mentors, have become a valued and integral part of the pre-service training of teachers. In a few they are also involved in the induction and support of novice teachers. TISSNTE is a Comenius II project that began in September 2006 and runs to the end of 2008. Its aims are to:
- identify and analyse what currently takes place as support for novice teachers
- devise instruments to identify the needs of mentors/supporters
- facilitate cross European debate about ‘good practice’
- formulate a portfolio of support strategies for those involved in supporting novice teachers
- stimulate exchange between teachers and teacher educators
- add to the European policy debate on the induction and support of novice teachers
- provide training and support for those involved with novice teachers in schools and beyond.
The training will take the form of an intensive course for a group of teachers drawn from across the EU. It will be held in Budapest in October 2008.
The poster will outline the aims of the project and describe the progress towards its goals. It will present an analysis of the results of the piloting of the needs analysis tool for mentors. This provides data from all of the member countries of the project on the training needs of teacher mentors. The poster will also give examples of the materials to be used in the intensive course, the virtual resources library that has been created and the website that has been developed. The formative evaluation, making use of members’ logs, will be discussed and the tools that will be used to evaluate the final project outcomes will be outlined.
Method
The poster will use pictoral, graphical and written sources. The pictoral will show team meetings during the project, mentors working with teachers and the venue of the intensive course.
The findings of the piloting of the needs analysis tool for mentors will be presented graphically.
There will be personal accounts from members of the project about working with teacher mentors and also the pressures of being involved in such a European project that will form part of the formative project evaluation.
There will be documentation showing the aims of the project, how it has been set up and how it will be evaluated.
A taste of the varied materials to be used by mentors on the international intensive course will also be included on the poster.
Expected Outcomes
The poster will
• show the purposes of the project,
• progress that has been made over the past year,
• a critical appraisal of how the project is progressing towards its original goals.
