This paper is based on reflections concerning a now finalised European Union Research project in seven national contexts on institutional restructuring and professional knowledge (PROFKNOW). We are here sharing our experiences of this research in relation to issues on comparative studies and research cooperation in a globalised research community. Our objective is to present reflections in relation to global asymmetries in preconditions for comparative studies and for research cooperation and communication.
Firstly, we noted the impact on international comparisons that supra-national organisations such as the OECD have when presenting national cases and how these are to used to locate national cases in an international context by researchers as well as by local policy-makers.
Secondly, we noted that there are asymmetries in research communication and discourse positions. Thus, we noted in our research review an Anglo-Saxon hegemony in the inclusion and exclusion of texts from different national contexts, where texts written outside the Anglo-Saxon domain with few exceptions had little impact, even if it is written in English. This notion is indicating a homogenisation of current research communities. Thirdly, we also noted a homogenisation of different narratives of education changes – starting with expanding welfare states, dictatorships and secularisation and ending up in education restructuring of different kinds.
Based on this we put forwards a few preliminary conclusions on research cooperation in globalising contexts – proposing increased reflexivity in international research cooperation of vital concern in an expanding European Education Research Area.
