Contribution
The school is a complex social organization characterized by the existence of social relationship between different groups, and as such, by the presence of conflicts. This paper focuses on the school conflicts from the developmental and transactional point of view, taking them as good opportunities for the adolescents´ development of the ability to negotiate, promote mutual understanding, and responsibility. The main objective of our research is to analyze the students´ participation in six highly frequent and emotional intense school conflicts (three between students and three between students and teachers), and the use of the strategies in the resolution of these conflicts. The sample comprised 320 students of 2º and 4º course of Compulsory Secondary School, drawn from three public and private schools, evenly distributed by sex, course and type of school. Preliminary results showed that there were no differences in the participation of school conflicts according to the type of conflict. Girls and younger adolescents reported a more frequent use of Mediation, Negotiation and Adaptation whereas male and older adolescents reported the use of more dominant tactics such as Violent and Power assertion strategies. Results are discussed in comparison with those obtained in a parallel study exploring family conflicts.
