This paper focuses on family involvement in the education of their teenagers at risk of dropping out from compulsory secondary school within the 13-16 age range and tries to compare family practices across two countries, namely Cyprus and Spain. It is believed that the differences in history, culture and socio-economic development of these two countries might relate to do with the drop-out phenomenon, as well as the expectations and practices of the families towards formal education. The aim of the paper is to identify and suggest some good practices to families, schools, educational leaders and policy makers on how parents could feel competent enough to cope with their teenagers’ needs and demands. 131 Spanish and Cypriot families whose children attended six schools -three in each country- completed a questionnaire investigating: a) parental perceptions of their children’s activities in their free time, b) academic expectations for their children, c) parental concern regarding their children’s education, and d) parent-teacher interactions. Descriptive measures as well as t-test comparative analysis between Spain and Cyprus were undertaken. Results show that these families share an encouraging attitude towards their teenagers. Nonetheless, significant statistical differences between Spanish and Cypriot parents suggest that the Spanish families show a more protective parenting style than the Cypriot families. The study points to the lack of support these families face to advice and stimulate their children at home, and to the need to promote school-family partnerships.
