The documentation of the digital divide is a moving target. Researchers had to situate IT access and use within the context of 21st century life and work, and consider local circumstances of use for teaching and learning. Five access-and-use issues, and the related challenges and strategies based on what research says about the digital divide were identified. New digital literacy demands placed on education systems were pointed to, and researchers underscored the challenges and need for basic literacy that allows individuals to access information and use IT to create value for their communities. The main research questions that grew out of specific studies (gender-based digital divide issues, assistive technologies and inclusive education, critical factors to a successful approach to digital equity, culturally responsive education and the preservation of the cultures of indigenous peoples, leadership approach to the question of how teachers and teacher educators can collaborate in ‘doing and living equity’) will be highlighted.
