This presentation focuses on the education of pupils with SEBD in mainstream primary schools in The Netherlands. Three main questions will be addressed:
• What is the extent of SEBD in primary schools, and what are the background characteristics and educational needs of pupils with SEBD?
• How do SEBD pupils achieve in language and arithmetic, when compared to their peers and what factors influence their achievement?
• How do SEBD pupils rate their psychological wellbeing, social integration, and self-competence and what factors influence these ratings?
School principals and teachers in grades 2, 4, 6, and 8 in 600 mainstream primary schools participated in this study. Questionnaires were completed by school principals and teachers. In addition, teachers were invited to complete a form for every pupil they considered to have special educational needs (SEN) and the teachers’ competence in teaching pupils with SEN was assessed. Pupils completed tests in language, reading and arithmetic. Pupils in grades 6 and 8 completed a questionnaire on their psychological wellbeing, social integration, and self-confidence. Multilevel analyses were carried out in order to assess the contribution of variables at the school, class, and pupil levels to the pupils’ achievement and ratings.
