At the first and the second level of elementary schools the education system in the Czech Republic allows sorting pupils according to their abilities. Therefore teachers are assigned to pupils to selective or non-selective classes and groups by directors and management of elementary schools. This thesis deals with the assigning of teachers to classes by directors and management of elementary schools and also deals with main ways of this determination - what way and according to which criteria teachers are assigned to different types of classes. The research in this thesis is supported by studies, which have been dealing with the quality of teacher and the selective education since the 60s of the 20th century. In the 80s of the 20th century two important research projects came into existence. It was the effectiveness of the education process and the criterion of professional expertise of teachers. The concept of teacher quality also closely relates to the topic of raising the level of results of pupils and compliance with equal access for all pupils without a difference. However, the amateur public does not agree with professionals. The differentiation of education is represented with different ways, it is always important to define what way we look at the issue of differentiation of education. Assigning students to different groups in the same school usually occurs in the USA and the UK but the selection of students to different types of selective or non-selective schools or permanent classes is usual in the Czech Republic. The classifying of pupils doesn´t have to exist at the same school, but at the different schools, here we prefer the definition of the inside and outside differentiation. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on the definition of the differential education and examines what is a view on teachers and a style of their teaching in selective and non-selective classes. The main question is how directors or management choose teachers into selective or non-selective classes. The second question takes focus on the attitude of directors with the concept of teacher quality. This concept can be conditional according to characteristic of specific school.
