15 SES 14, International Boundary-Crossing Study of Higher Education Institutions Working in Partnership with Schools to Improve Participation in Systems and Learning
Symposium
Contribution
This Case Study was conducted in a secondary school in Guyana. A first stage of an action research pilot study, presented to ECER (2013) identified participation in school processes and practices is not at optimal level. There is a gap in knowledge about the developing understandings and the potential characteristics of beneficial participation within schools or institutions of learning. A second stage of the research focuses on the presentation of the evidence to the Senior Management Team (SMT) and the change strategies they developed. The third stage presented here focuses on the impact of the change strategies that the SMT develop. may focus on promoting cultural alignment of core values whilst acknowledging and celebrating diversity, in particular of religion, race, gender and disability. The change strategies may encourage teachers and students to consider the best that has been taught and said. This knowledge has the potential to add and promote a deeper cultural understanding, also a higher standard of awareness in the promotion of an ethos of learning, developing gaining skills, raising aspirations, setting goals at personal and professional levels and thus aiming to become useful and worthwhile citizens within the country
