Contribution
In Portugal, many schools have experienced increasingly diverse student populations and some teachers struggle to cope with this diversity, often resulting in low levels of teacher retention. This paper presents some of the lessons learnt as a result of an action learning project developed across a network of five Portuguese schools. It aimed to identify patterns of inequity and to develop practices that respond to these issues so that all students are included.
Emphasis was given to building on the practices and experiences of all in the schools’ communities, developing collaborative learning and supporting the teachers as they engaged with the challenge of making their own practice more equitable. Progress achieved is being disseminated by the High Commission for Immigration and Intercultural Dialogue. One of the most sustainable outcomes is that of building capacity and empowering a group of teachers who acted as coordinators during this project, but who continue to work together to improve their own practices as well as those of their school staff.
