As attainment targets for ICT have become a formal part of the curriculum in compulsory education in Flanders, instruments are required to assess the level of ICT competencies among learners. ICT competencies can be described as an integrated set of knowledge, skills and attitudes for functional use of ICT in an educational context. In our Monitor study, funded by the Department of Education, we used exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses to construct reliable scales to measure learners’ self-perceived ICT competencies based on the attainment targets.
Respondents included in the analyses were 1558 pupils in primary education and 1258 in secondary education. A first scale was constructed that measures learners’ attitudes toward the use of ICT for learning (6 items, α = .75). A second scale assesses learners’ self-perceived knowledge and skills in ICT use for learning (7 items, α = .86). Both constructs are interrelated (α = .31).
The first part of this symposium session will focus on the construction of the instruments, the second part on the scale results for all pupils. As could be expected, ICT knowledge and skills increase significantly over the years. Conversely, the attitudinal component of ICT competencies seems to decrease with age.
