The Arts and Humanities Research Council in the UK created a research programme called the Diasporas, Migration and Identities Programme. This funded a project that explored relationships between narratives of migration and home artefacts from Pakistani heritage families based in a South Yorkshire town. The project was community-based, involving an early years’ centre, a school, and a museum. It created an exhibition of objects and stories by the families. This data archive was subsequently used to create family learning materials and an educational resources website, called www.everyobjecttellsastory.org. Photographs of the objects were collected for analysis and display in the exhibition and on the website. This presentation examines time and space in relation to the objects and stories. Objects carried different timeframes in relation to diverse experiences of migration. Some objects were connected to stories that spanned several generations, while others were connected to just one generation. Equally, objects carried different meanings in relation to the different spaces in which they were found. The evidence base created from the project informed the educational resource pack, ‘Every object tells a story’. The implications of the study will be discussed in relation to literacy education and inclusive community education in diverse heritage settings.
