Proposal Information/Research Questions/Theoretical Approach:
While there are sweeping initiatives to broaden the appeal of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) to cater to international student populations, as a means of maintaining the perceived relevancy and appeal of HBCU’s, little research has addressed the appeal of HBCU’s for those students from international destinations. The HBCU associate with this study has adopted five goals for their 2011-2021 Strategic Plan. One of the five strategic goals is to create enhanced educational opportunities by, “hiring and retaining well-qualified, experienced, and dedicated faculty and staff, offering challenging, internationally relevant academic curricula, and welcoming and supporting a diverse and inclusive campus community.”
This research involves in depth interviews with 10 Saudi Arabian students who elected to attend an Education Administration Masters/Certification program at an HBCU that is located on the east coast of the United States. Through an examination of their academic, social and personal experiences, this study sheds light on the challenges, successes, resilience and resistance among international students at an HBCU. It too reveals their motivations to teach, philosophies of teaching and pedagogical approaches that may be unique to this population.
To gain a deeper understanding the experiences and pedagogical beliefs of my participants, we use Ethnographic and Critical Race Methodologies to examine the following research questions:
- How do students describe and explain their political, cultural, social and personal experiences and beliefs, as individuals and as future educators and administrators?
- How do they understand the significance of their experiences and beliefs and the ways in which they may be related to their academic, social and personal experiences in the U.S.?
- How do these understandings inform participants’ beliefs about and approaches to their education course work, practicum experiences and effectiveness as educators and school leaders in Saudi Arabia?
