Contribution
This paper will reflect on the findings from research conducted as part of the EduMAP project in selected adult education and VET programmes in England, Scotland, Ireland and the Netherlands, considering how these can contribute to current issues and debates in vocational and other lifelong learning contexts. Presenting examples of good practice is a common objective in educational (and other areas of social) research, and there is a strong impetus for research to discover ‘new ways’ of doing things and finding out ‘what works’, especially through looking at practice (and policy) in different countries. But what are the factors that contribute to ‘good’ practice in a particular context and what lessons can be learnt for other settings? By taking a more detailed look at research findings from this study, including in the context of communication flows and practices in adult education settings, we reflect on some of the key underlying ideas, concepts, discourses and dilemmas that we encountered in our research and debate issues related to change, innovation as well as sustainability and continuity in VET and adult education contexts. The discussion will be illustrated by examples of ‘good practice’ – programmes contributing to social cohesion of young adults and facilitating their social and economic participation, specifically through vocational and employability training, mentoring and supporting services within adult education contexts.
