Session Information
16 SES 05 B, ICT in Schools (part 1)
Symposium, to be continued in Session 16 SES 06 B
Contribution
The presentation is a part of the big national project (2008-2010) how to promote ICT in everyday life of schools in Finland. It introduces what are typical features in innovative schools which have adopted ICT in their working culture. The study is based on observations and discussions with principals and teachers in 20 schools in different parts of Finland. The most important thing is that ICT is not a separate tool in the school. It is integrated in the schools’ empowering working culture and learning methods. The schools based their work on learner-centered knowledge creation methods. They have made extra investments for special needs pupils and immigrant students and used ICT as means to advance their learning. The curriculum was flexible and renewal orientated, changes were based on students’ needs. The schools had promoted internal and external communication, e.g. with parents and companies. School leaders gave a full support for teachers’ ICT applications and pay attention on teachers’ positive ICT attitude when recruiting them. Teachers’ had adopted cooperative and sharing working culture but there was still a challenge to get all teachers to use effectively ICT. Teachers and principals struggled jointly to find more time and resources for new practices.
