Contribution
This paper presents a review of the use of the literature relating to the use of social network sites for academic purposes. The term 'social capital' has been defined by Huysman & Wulf in the context of electronically networked communities as "networked ties of goodwill, mutual support, shared language, shared norms, social trust, and a sense of mutual obligation that people can derive value from." The literature has been surveyed in order to critique this definition in terms of current practice relating to the use of social network sites. The key question was: 'to what extent are the principles of goodwill, mutual support, shared language and norms and social trust evident from the literature? Our earlier work has indicated that participation in social network sites plays a significant role in peer support in and academic environment. Key areas discussed on social network sites included assignment work and teaching placements. These areas are particularly sensitive to issues such as trust and mutual support and we were interested in identifying the experience of others in these areas.
