Contribution
There has been international neglect of teaching species at schools because it was thought to be old-fashioned. However biodiversity is in danger and accordingly UN has declared the year 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity. NatureGate Online Service is new kind of interactive learning environment for easy identification of organism species. IUCN recommends use of NatureGate Online Service. The theoretical framework was constructed using doctoral dissertation of Kaasinen and research on current cognitive psychology. Research questions and their rationale: How do subjects use NatureGate Online Service? For trees and shrubs the design of NatureGate Online Service affords many characteristics of region, habitat, leaves, flowers, twigs and buds. For fish species, the characteristics include shape of fish, different types of fins, colour, texture etc. What characteristics of those available subjects are using in particular? How long does it take to identify a tree or shrub species compared to fish species using NatureGate Online Service? Each subject was presented three organism species for identification. The method for collecting data is Camtasia Studio Screen Recorder. Data is transcribed, analysed and tabulated for answering research questions. Results are discussed for improving species identification and NatureGate Online Service as a learning environment.
