05 SES 03, Overcoming Ghettos: Transformative Schools that Transform Urban Areas

The plans for developing disadvantaged neighbourhoods which aim to obtain good results backs up the transformation of all social areas. In this paper we present the case of the Milagrosa neighbourhood, in which social transformation began in the school and the results of this have been shown to have an impact on the neighbourhood. This case is different due to the fact that, for the first time, the proposed actions in all areas are based on successful action. Some of the actions implemented and which are presented here include: the creation of a consultative neighbourhood council, which provides a voice and decision-making powers to people from the neighbourhood themselves; or the development of sustainable employment, using the actions of cooperatives as a role model, since they are obtaining a productive performance and establishing agreements with companies which are leaders of their various sectors. The application process for these programmes is demonstrating that it is necessary for all social agents (family members, members of the community and of the administration) to agree to fight to achieve a common goal, based on the results of a review of educational projects, in order to improve coexistence and learning and for these projects to become successfully consolidated.
