Contribution
The paper describes one aspect of an empirical longitudinal study (noesis) carried out in Lower Austria, from 2010 to 2014. It focuses on the educational aspirations of 6th grade students from various perspectives (teachers, parents, students). Results of the first of three cohorts (N=550) from three testing points (May 2010, October 2010 and October 2011) are presented. Our results show, that parents and students who have an immigrant background have higher expectations and hopes for the educational careers of their children than do native parents and students. These children also have great confidence in their abilities and hope to turn their ideas into reality. Generally parents tend to higher graduation for their children, but it seems, that parents with immigrant background have even higher expectations. From literature we know, that children, especially students with immigrant backgrounds, loose their self-confidence during secondary lower school and end up with lower expectations. Shortly after the school transition (4th to 5th grade) students seem insecure about their graduation prospects, but most of immigrant students tend to have a clear tendency towards higher education. After one year at the new school students (6th grade) seem to be more confident about their graduation prospects.
