Contribution
Hein (1995) drew upon the work of Dewey, and upon Pepper’s four world views on how knowledge is constructed, to consider four learning approaches which have relevance for museums. Briskman (1980) argued that it is impossible to develop a general theory of creativity, pointing out that such a theory would eliminate all the mystery and miraculousness of creativity, and would eliminate creativity itself. This study is a major contribution on the effect of museum visit on enhancing creative learning in art education. Among other research which informs learning theory in museum settings is Hooper- Greenhill’s work (1999) on transmission versus constructivist models of communication, and also her use of hermeneutic approaches to understand the process of meaning-making in museums. Besides empirically studying how art museum education is regarded locally, this study traces the development of the concept of art museum education in the West and compares it with views of art museum education in Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore and Shanghai.
Research Question
The study first considers the nature of museum education and the educational
role in term of creative learning. It discusses the following:
1) To determine the degree to which the art museum can foster design learning;
2) To determine ways in which the museum environment can maximise its potential as a core element for creative learning stimulation tool;
3) The transition process from museum visit to project implementation through creative thinking;
4) What are the keys elements making museum visit to be success in creativity development;
5) Understand the educational role of a museum and compare its nature between Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore and Shanghai.
