Contribution
The paper I propose to deliver at ECER 2013 is a follow up of an ethnographic research on food and education that I carried out in 2012 in three Padua (Italy) municipal pre-school institutions. Last year ECER presentation (Gobbo 2012a) concerned an interpretation of data about a “Food Project” carried out by teachers of scuola dell’infanzia (infancy school) from the perspective of social and food sustainability, while a further paper (Gobbo 2012b) presented at the AAA conference in San Francisco dealt with the rules of preparing meals in school kitchens.
This year participant observation and collection of professional life stories will focus on how – through the ritual of school lunch – children learn about the different foods’ textures, consistency, taste (that supposedly are often different from the ones they eat at home) on the one hand, and, on the other, how teachers promote, and support, the values and habits of sociability, autonomy and trust among children between 3 and 12 months of age, in a multicultural nursery school.
Though school lunch is only one of the nursery rituals, it certainly is the most important one for the children (and teachers alike) not only because it satisfies the children’s “hunger” (as teachers underline) but also because it entails a host of socio-cultural/educational rules, habits and goals that are more significant than other nursery rituals such as the one related to hygiene and the afternoon nap.
