Contribution
Swedish preschool has been ascribed an important role in forming children’s gender identity and attitudes. The national curriculum of preschools, specifically state the importance of gender equality and the rights for boys and girls to form their identities free from gender stereotypes.
The discussion draws on results from a study conducted in one Swedish preschool. At this preschool girls and boys acted in a wide variety of different ways that were not necessarily connected to expect gendered identities. Despite this, if teachers planning of activities became unreflected, norms about sexuality, gender, status and age emerged and structured the way boys and girls everyday life where planned by the teachers.
The aim of this paper is to explore how specific gendered, status and age related positions became normalized in preschool practices and to discuss how these where negotiated by girls and boys.
