General Activities

Network 8 has ongoing collaborations with the Schools for Health in Europe (SHE) research group. The SHE Network Foundation aims to improve the health of children and young people in Europe, including reducing health inequalities, through a specific setting focus on schools. is supported by the World Health Organization and the Commission of the European Union. This year the SHE released a Factsheet on 'State of the Art in Mental Health Promotion in schools' authored by Network 8 conveners (Catriona O'Toole & Emily Darlington) amongst other activities.

Network 8 also convened a meeting the the British Educational Research Association (BERA) Special interest group on Mental Health with the aim of exploring synergies and possible future collaborations. In attendance were Ros McLellan and Catriona O'Toole (Network 8) and Anthea Rose, Michelle Jayman and Jonathon Glazzard (BERA)


Network 8 has two ongoing collaborations planned for publication in 2021-22:

  • Critical perspectives on Wellbeing and Schooling (Springer, edited by Ros McLellan, Carole Faucher and Venka Simovska) and
  • School Food, Equity and Social Justice (Routledge, edited by Dorte Ruge, Irene Torres and Darren Powell).

Network 8 has an agreement with Emerald on suggesting special issues for their journal, Health Education. Two special issues are planned for publication in 2021 and already available as E-publications, these are:

Future Plans

  • Network 8 look forward to publication of two book publications in the coming year as well as journal special issues as outline above, We aim to build on the momentum with additional dissemination activities, for instance we have plans for 1-2 EERA blogs in the coming year.
  • The Network are exploring possible applications for EERA funding to further enhance collaboration possibilities, which are deemed especially important in light of Covid-19 disruptions.
  • We have issued a special call for ECER 2022 and hope build and strengthen critical conversations on health and wellbeing education, both within and beyond the Network.
