Contribution
The present research is aimed to study and identify the role of the teacher and specify principles of selecting teaching methods in virtual university’s curriculum. Teaching is the process of interaction between the instructor and the learner that is aimed to learn. Throughout this process, in some situations the control is in the hands of the instructor and in other situations in the hands of the learner. According to the level of control of the instructor and learner on this process, different teaching methods are shaped.
In this research a qualitative methodology has been applied to identify the role of the teacher in virtual university. For this, initially twenty experts and authors in the filed of instruction and learning in virtual environments were identified and their opinion has been analyzed. The results reveal that a virtual instructor is not provider of information, but he must assist the students in construction and production of knowledge. Therefore in the activity-based environment of virtual university the instructor bears the responsibility to guide, direct, moderate discussions, facilitate the content and consult. Based on the role of the teacher, teaching strategies in this environment are selected based on principles such as: increase of interaction between teacher and student, increase of collaboration among students, encouragement of active learning, providing the possibility of quick feedback, reinforcement of cognitive flexibility and stress on knowing the learning methods.
