Contribution
‘Social cohesion’ is often perceived as a source of desired individual and social behaviours between persons and groups (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement, 2007). Dijkstra et al. (2004) clarified that social cohesion assists the development of educational possibilities to stimulate citizenship and individually and socially responsible behaviour of pupils. The question for research is: which theoretical model of ‘social cohesion’ enables adequate definition of this concept and its use in educational research and practice, to increase individually and socially responsible behaviour of staff and pupils?
In order to answer this question, a multilevel model was devised, incorporating three levels of information sources (school managers, teachers, pupils) crossed by three types of indicators of social cohesion (social composition, social integration and social safety).
The empirical study of this question was made possible by using data collected with the help of an internet-based monitor designed for the Dutch Ministry of Education (Mooij, Sijbers, & Sperber, 2006). Data collection took place in secondary education and will be repeated biannually. In 2006, 80.770 pupils, 6.897 teachers and support staff, and 629 school managers participated in this research.
