Contribution
SITES2006 is an international comparative survey aimed at (1) examining the extent of ICT integration in classroom practices, and (2) identifying factors that contribute most to effective integration of ICT into learning and teaching. Various sources (e.g. policy issues/ concerns; findings from SITES- module 1 (Pelgrum & Anderson, 2001) and module 2 (Kozma, 2003) – a study on innovative practices using ICT; recent national surveys and other research outcomes) were used to elaborate these questions into a conceptual framework (see Figure below).
Indicators for each of the concepts in the framework were developed and questionnaires for school principals, ICT-coordinators and math and science teachers were designed. Schools and grade 8 math and science teachers from 22 educational systems participated in SITES2006. Per educational system a representative sample of 400 schools (resulting in a total sample size of 8700 schools) and 4 teachers per school participated. The main international findings (Law, Pelgrum & Plomp, forthcoming) will be presented from three perspectives: school, teacher and pedagogical practices. To illustrate how participating countries utilize this study to address questions of national relevance, also results from one developing country (South Africa) and one industrialized country (Denmark) will be presented.
