Being one of the popular applied method social network analysis is believed to be one of the relevant lines of investigation of students’ behavior and academic achievements in the university. Instruments of social network analysis allow exploring new factors that influence behavior and academic performance and give an opportunity for complete describing of process of social capital formation. Using of SNA explained by the idea of the university which is known to be a place where people form their relations.
The major of studies focused on two main mechanism of students’ social network formation: propinquity and homophily. In the literature there is a conclusive prove that students are likely become friends with those who are the same race and ethnicity, have equal socioeconomic status and interests. Additionally choice of same academic major, participation in varsity and students’ organization have positive impact to likelihood of formation a ties among students. Roommates also have more chance to become friends and living with different-race student influence on formation interracial students’ social network. It means that university policy is able to effect on formation of different-race social networks. In addition to listed factors geographically distance is essential: the closer students live to each other the more likely they become friends.
In this research we try to examine factors which determine students’ social network formation in HRU Higher School of Economics in Nizhny Novgorod. For this study there were interviewed students from two faculties: faculty of economics and faculty of management. The questionnaire includes questions about students’ academic performance and behavior, their attitude to friendship, socioeconomics characteristics, hobbies and spare time.
In the study we will try to verify empirically factors which are known to be significant for student’s network creation. We suppose that traditional factors such as geographic closeness and homophily by gender, age and grade point average will be essential. On the other hand we expect to find out some additional factors concerned with available data.
