15 SES 12, International Boundary-Crossing Study of Higher Education Institutions Working in Partnership with Schools to Improve Participation In Processes And Practices
Symposium
Contribution
The Nigerian case study is the third stage of a pilot action-research project developed in partnership between two junior secondary schools in Nigeria and a university for cross boundary comparison with eleven other countries. The research fills a gap in the theory and practice about teachers’ and students’ participation in their school’s processes and practices, and the impact on learning, learning outcomes/the acquisition of skills and planning for future destinations. Results from the first stage of the action-research involving 32 male-students, 28 female-students and 29 teachers indicate an absence of a culture of participation facilitated by pedagogical relationships between teachers, students, and the school administration. However, students and teachers wanted to participate and valued building pedagogical relationships characterized by trust, positive regard, respect, and social justice. The findings were presented to the schools’ leadership/management team which informed planning for school improvement in the second stage of the research. This study reports the third stage of the action-research, which is the impact of the change strategies to optimize community members’ participation and improve learning, learning outcomes, key skills, and engagement with the labour market and societal challenges. The study’s limitations include absence of parents, specific governance role incumbents, and employer engagement.
