15 SES 13, Networks in Education: How Are They Developed and Studied?
Symposium
Contribution
Recently, scholars have suggested that postgraduate master’s programs for in-service teachers may be a new avenue in fostering networks among educators in schools that can contribute to educational development. Given the recent proliferation of these kinds of networks, there is a dearth of empirical knowledge about their nature, processes and outcomes. This study examined such networks in a Master’s of Education (MEd) program offered by a Graduate School of Education that is embedded in a K-12 environment of a Charter Management Organization (CMO) in the United States. This paper reports on six case studies of MEd students and shows over the course of the two year MEd program in what way students are developing their teacher leader-researcher identities in conjunction with developing their personal networks with school colleagues. Coursework documents and social network data were collected and analysed at several time points. Software of UCINET and NetDraw were used for network analysis and focused on changes in collegial relationships of advice, knowledge exchange, collaboration, influence, trust and inspiration. Outcomes show four different ways of developing personal networks with colleagues and the way they interact with the development of teacher leader-researcher identities.
