26 SES 05 A, Researching Principals' Professional Identities Across National Contexts
Symposium
Contribution
This study examines the development of professional identity among female school principals in Sweden--where more representation of female principals was once nationally encouraged. Using a narrative inquiry approach, we analyze how family and upbringing, life experiences, and multiple tasks and challenges within the work in schools impact one successful high school female principal in Sweden. This study, drawing from a larger international study of successful principals in 20 countries, pushes the knowledge of diverse leadership styles forward. The research question asks, “How do female principals in successful schools build their professional identity?”, and “Are their professional identities still impacted by gender inequalities?” Results showed that professional identities are paramount in generating leadership in relations with teachers, parents, and students.
