Contribution
The Education through Diversity Action Research Project, carried out in the period 2006- 2009 and funded by the European Council, had eight contributing countries: France (lead partner), UK, Portugal, Italy, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria and Finland.
Its focus research question was: how can diversity of young people in schools and communities be used as an educational advantage? A research team from every country carried out a school based intervention in order to provide evidence in support of diversity as a resource in education. The UK team, based in London, in partnership with one primary and one secondary school developed an initiative, which falls into the category of autobiographical writing, with the following aims:
- to provide structured opportunities for creative use of students’ experiences, cultural and linguistic background;
- to work with different media in order to develop an enriched written expression;
- to develop language awareness in terms of bilingualism at the individual level and multilingualism in the school and community context.
Method
Expected Outcomes
The outcomes of this project provided the evidence that there is a need for structuring opportunities within the curriculum for the purposes of facilitating intercultural dialogue among children and adults in school communities. The use of autobiographical approach exposed the issues of negotiating co-existence of conflicting backgrounds within one school community.
