Up to now, the impact of the "Bologna Process", aimed at the creation of a European Higher Education Area (EHEA), has acted mainly at the first and second-cycle level of higher education. However, there is a growing impulse to include the third cycle as well, and specifically the Doctoral Studies, in the framework of the creation, along with the EHEA, of a European Research Area (ERA), that should assure to Europe (a European Area which goes beyond the EU borders) a suitable space in the global “knowledge society”.
This present stage of the “Bologna” policy addresses strongly a redefinition of the nature of knowledge itself, and of creativity in its production. Actually, Doctoral Studies, par excellence a space where training and research meet, represent a crucial lieu of observation about “how notions of a knowledge society are translated into education and training”. The paper will highlight some crucial points of the process in action to focus on how policy discourse becomes an ‘actor’ in governing education. The discussion is based on a comparative research work that is being carried out on the subject.
