Contribution
In the UK, the support for minority groups is provided within an inclusive approach to school education where much of the support is 'mainstreamed'. As part of the EC project led by George Muskens, the UK team has been looking at the policy framework within which support is provided, noting significant differences and similarities across the four countries of the UK - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In particular, the presentation will draw out the implications for mainstreaming social inclusion. In addition, it has sought to identify case studies of initiatives which have made some impact the children of four particular groups: asylum seekers and refuges; gypsies and travellers; looked after children; and, minority language speakers. In this discussion, the findings will be set against the research from the other countries involved in the project, highlighting differences in practice as well as underpinning philosophy and illustrating these with specific cases.
The findings of the UK team contribute to the meta-analysis of approaches to social inclusion in school education across Europe and how the impact of initiatives and projects is measured, both in terms of achievement and in ‘softer’ measures of engagement, motivation and aspiration.
