Contribution
In Service Learning, students participate in a service activity that meets a civil need, while in turn, reflecting on this activity fosters a deeper understanding of academic content and develops students’ attitudes towards civic responsibility (Bringle & Clayton 2012). Thus, in service learning two learning venues can be differentiated, the university (e.g. lecturers, students) and the civil society (e.g. community partners). Both venues have different organizational cultures. Both must cooperate in Service Learning. This means reciprocity in Service Learning, that lecturers, students and community partners work together to improve performance (Godfrey, Illes & Berry 2005). Current research results clearly show that new conceptions of time and place are necessary to implement new forms of mutual organizational partnerships (Grogan & Fahrenwald 2019). We want to present a conceptual analysis of the different organizational cultures (Hodgkinson & Foley 2003, Gerholz 2019) with the aim, to derive organizational design principles for sustainable cooperation between universities and civil society.
