04 SES 11 A, Integrating Diversity in Teacher Training Programmes in the Netherlands
Research Workshop
Contribution
The educational labour market in the Netherlands is very homogeneous - as is the case in many other European countries. Especially in primary education over 80% of the teachers are (white) women. Male teachers and teachers from different ethnic backgrounds are underrepresented. This lack of diversity starts at the teacher training colleges where only about 17% of students are male and around 6% of students have a non-western ethnic background. On top of the low number of these students choosing a career in education, the drop-out rate of both male students and students with different etnic backgrounds is with 50% much higher than that of female students. At this moment we witness the same trends in teacher training colleges for secondary education. The Dutch Center of Expertise for the Educational Labourmarket has developed different innovative instruments to further diversity - both cultural diversity as well as gender diversity - at Dutch teacher training colleges. Pilotprojects have been set up to test the various instruments and evaluation research has been done to find out which instruments were succesful. The idea was that both male students, as well as students from different ethnic background needed to be targeted specifically to interest them in a teacher training college, while at the same time the curriculum and the culture at the colleges needed adjustment to become truly inclusive. In this research workshop we will present several instruments tested in the Dutch context. We would like to discuss with international experts and organisations whether these instruments are usefull in other settings, and which instruments are available from other countries. The main research question in the workshop will be: what workes in furthering cultural and gender diversity in teacher training programmes (in primary education)?
