Contribution
Social skills are considered as the variable of effective interaction with other people. Social skills include the ability to build rapport quickly, mediate conflict and help others soothe their feelings (Reece and Brandt, 1999). Daniel Goleman, author of the best-selling book “Emotional Intelligence” accepts that social skills are one of the most important fundamental of emotional intelligence. This important skills are mainly taught during pre-school education in many countries. The pre-school education institutions, prepare social environment by providing play grounds for our children. In this manner, the children can learn social skills including obeying the rules, sharing, taking responsibilities and cooperating through social interactions during the games they play. Many research projects have found that social skills, pre school education and families’ attitudes are very important variables in terms of child’s development process (Anderson, 1994; Ögretir, 1999; Dinç, 2003; Guralnick, Neville, Connor and Hammond, 2003; Sarı, 2007). The purpose of this research study is to compare social skills and parents’ attitudes between students who have attended preschool educational institutions and students have not. For this reason the following research problems were developed: (1) Is there any significant difference between students who have preschool education and students have not in terms of social skill levels? (2) Is there any significant difference between students’ social skill levels according to selected variables such as, gender, starting age to their education, having brother and sister, educational levels of the family, mothers’ occupation, and family attitudes towards child education?
