IAQV tool is the result of an investigation, "Standards and indicators to analyze the quality of life of students with special needs associated with disability in its educational process", conducted by the Research Group on Diversity and Inclusive School of Department of Applied Education and Educational Psychology at the University of the Balearic Islands, for three years (2005-2008).
In this research we intended to analyze the situation of pupils with special educational needs in primary and secondary education from the viewpoint of teachers, students themselves and their families, and then identify the standards and indicators to evaluate educational practices for improvement.
Two main objectives were raised:
- Develop a tool that helps schools to discuss his views on education given to students with special educational needs associated with disabilities.
- Apply the instrument in a sample of schools and evaluate the results.
The prospect of inclusive education, Shalock heuristic model (1997) on the concept of quality of life, the work of Hegarty and Goode (1994), the program "Schools for All" UNESCO and the material developed by Booth and Ainscow (2000) "Index for Inclusion", are the fundamental theoretical references on which we develop the research.
The IAQV consists of 12 domains, 30 standards and 211 indicators. Domains or areas of analysis give the instrument an organized structure. Standards are the requirements to be met to ensure the quality of life of students with special educational needs; these standards are divided into quality indicators that affect all educational agents that affect the education of these students.
The domains are:
- Physical environment of the school
- Principles and values of the school
- Training and teacher attitude
- Organs of leadership and management
- Organization and coordination within the school
- Teachers Support
- Educational action in the classroom
- Participation in the activities of the school
- Relationships with families
- Relationship with peers
- Resources
- Satisfaction of students with special educational needs
A standard example of its indicators is the following, example that corresponds to the standard 1.1. the first domain (physical environment of the school) with five indicators of quality.
Standard: The exterior space is accessible to the entire educational community.
Indicators:
1.1.1. The transport that uses the school is accessible to all.
1.1.2. Public transport is accessible near the school.
1.1.3. Entrances and exits of the school to comply with safety regulations.
1.1.4. Outside the school provides ramps and rails or any other measure necessary access.
1.1.5. Emergency exits, complying with accessibility regulations are adequate for the entire school community, including students who have special educational needs.
