Contribution
3D online environments as a technology to support learning have gained attention of practitioners and researchers in the last years. One promising domain for 3Denvironments is language learning. Still, there are hardly any evaluations of language learning courses 3D environments. The paper presents criteria and results from the evaluation of such courses. The criteria are developed in the context of the project AVALON (Access to Virtual and Action Learning live ONline). AVALON is a two-year project funded by the European Commission (Lifelong Learning Programme). Within the project tasks and activities to support language learning in 3D online worlds are developed, implemented and evaluated. Sequential explanatory mixed method designs were used to develop the evaluation criteria and for the evaluation. For the development of the criteria a quantitative questionnaire was used. Based on the results, an interview guide was developed. The results were turned into quantitative questionnaires for pre and post course surveys and into a qualitative interview guide. Online surveys were conducted with all participants of courses. Based on the results, some participants were selected for online interviews. The results show advantages and disadvantages of language learning in 3D environments.
