05 SES 03, Overcoming Ghettos: Transformative Schools that Transform Urban Areas
Symposium
Contribution
This paper is focused on one of the successful educational actions identified, especially on one in particular. In disadvantagds urban areas there are no centres, apart from the school, in which cultural or educational activities are carried out, nor were there any extracurricular activities of this type available before, so “extending the learning time” is one of the successful educational actions identified as providing a way to promote educational success and overcome social exclusion and school failure. This means that, in addition to the official educational timetable, the school provides more learning hours, since this benefits the education of children and young people, especially for those who are at risk. Within the framework of this successful educational action, one of the specific actions carried out is oriented towards coordinating all of the educational interaction of the children, connecting the activities they do in their free time with the school, thus increasing the learning hours. Thus for example, centres are created which are open over the weekend in which free time is used to learn. This has benefits as far as educational success for at risk children and young people is concerned.
