This paper expects to be part of a research project called: ’School experience, identity and community: Researching collaboratively in order to transform school practices’, this Project is being carried out in two Primary Schools, one of them is located in Málaga and the other school is located in Cabo de Gata (a town in Almería) and another secondary school from Málaga as well. Our methodological base works upon collaboration narratives.
We focus on the explanation of the ethnographical process from narratives, images, interviews…; we want to show the life of people (teacher, students, family) that interact in mentioned schools and their specific life stories. In other words, as Michael Fullan (1993) said, “the systems do not change alone, the people are who transform them”. We try to offer to the community of each school the possibility to discuss about their educative practices and in this way, in a collaborative perspective all of us try to understand hidden elements on the routines. It is getting an open-door to reflex and discuss in other to transforms and reflex over daily situations but also philosophical phenomena.
We use ethnography in order to collect some information to be used from the three collectives mentioned, developing strategies to analyze and discuss elements. Ethnography is one of these tools to catch relevant information from an external eye. There is a particularity to develop these ethnographies, it is the narrative perspective. We maintain the narratives of each group of people to explore the schools and the educative process. These ethnographies are also contrasted with life stories made before with families, teachers and students. In this way, all the information we were getting, came from literal words, thus we analyze narratives and we prepare documents for working from originals narratives. The same people (major figures of research) should modify this information once discussed. These methodological strategies permit us to find out and analyze in depth events, habits and expectative of the people, and also, beliefs, educative values, professional cultures, etc.
Objectives that we follow using ethnography analysis are:
1. To identify components and processes of schools experiences that are part of identity of students, teachers and families and their participation in the society.
2. To recognize elements and mechanisms involved on school structures and how it impacts on school identity and on the society.
3. To analyze and describe ways of participation in a communitarian perspective.
4. To offer relevant information of school practices, according to data we were collecting from all of the components.
5. To develop the participation of teachers, students and families to reflex and to research collaboratively in order to visualize educative practices, routines, perspectives and daily atmosphere in a pedagogical way.
