The concept of the "community of practice" is gaining greater interest in the education field because the role that communities can play in assisting students’ construction of knowledge and supporting their transformation of practice through group discussions and sharing of knowledge (Putnam and Borko, 2000). Therefore, there should be an emphasis on providing opportunities for students to participate in professional communities. The term "community of practice" is advocated by Lave and Wenger (1995) as they describe it as a set of relationships between persons, activity, and their world over time and in relation with other tangential and overlapping communities of practice.
Our research project aims to promote social interaction between students and to encourage the building of communities of ‘like-minded’ practitioners as described by Lave and Wenger (1995) and is funded by the Saxonian Ministry of Science 2008 - 2011. Methodically this research is achieved through case studies that document and sort learner communities created and adopted by German students. The findings are reflected in the light of the current web2.0 discussion.
