Session Information
WERA SES 08 E, Schools as Enabling Spaces Worldwide: Building Resilience and Moderating Risk
WERA Invited Symposium
Contribution
Schools play an important role in child and youth development. School’s role can be negative or positive. Although schools can function as a risk factor and although they can amplify the effects of other risk factors, school can also function as safe havens Schools can buffer or attenuate the effects of risk factors by providing students with safety, connectedness, care, challenge, structure, motivation, engagement support, opportunities to develop academic as well as individual and collective social and emotional competence. This symposium will provide examples of efforts in Africa, Asia, and North America to build schools that both address the effects of adversity as well as provide students with the tools and social capital to address adversity.
