Contribution
The starting point of this paper is the resolution signed in the Flemish Parliament in 2002 on philosophy for all in education. The central aim of the resolution is that philosophy is the origin when critical thinking and autonomy is desired (Vlaams Parlement, 2002). Philosophy education therefore is presented as an adequate investment in the formation of the critical and creative thinker. Remarkable is that philosophy education here does not concern an interest in a specific discipline nor an interest in the philosophical canon or the transmission of philosophical knowledge. Instead reference is made to philosophy because of its focus on the transformation of the school into a community of inquiry and the introduction of an attitude to think with children and youth instead of for children. This shift furthermore can be seen in the contrast between the school as an institute and the school as a professional learning community. The aim of this paper is to explore this challenge by becoming aware of this shift, by exploring its causes and by thinking creatively and innovatively about new educational strategies appropriate to this coming change.
Inspired by Bruno Latour the paper first indicates how the actual interest for philosophy education and the organizational design that accompanies it, install and legitimate a way of thinking that does not so much awakens a community of inquiry, but rather seems to liquidate its possibility to come. Second, I will explore another way of thinking the school as community of inquiry. No longer linked to practices that analyse objects as matters-of-fact, but as matters-of-concern (Latour, 2005). Which means giving a new design or a new shape to something - a chair, a knife, a package, a lamp, an interior, a school, a society.
