Contribution
Educational qualification plays an increasingly influential role in determining one's later occupational and earning opportunities. In Germany, the Hauptschule (or basic) certificate in particular has come to be significantly less valued by employers than higher-level certificates. After an additional 10th school year, Hauptschule students have the opportunity to obtain an intermediate certificate. However, certain groups of students are less successful in translating their educational plans into the earning of an intermediate certificate. For instance, 40% of high achieving students who intended to obtain an intermediate certificate in year 8 did graduate from year 10 with only a Hauptschule certificate (Schuchart, accepted). Drawing on a mixed-method approach, our project aims to identify school-related factors which facilitate or impede the earning of an intermediate certificate. Using quantitative data of a longitudinal study of Hauptschule students, we identified high achieving students with strong educational intentions in year 8 who did or did not graduate from year 10 with an intermediate certificate. With 15 of these graduates we carried out qualitative interviews. Results show that teachers play a significant role in the process of the development of student’s concrete plans for how to achieve their educational goals.
