Nowadays, it is extremely important to think carefully about the Universities’ renewed mission, which is being redrawn due to several challenges, questions, publics and roles those Institutions have to handle and to play. Globalisation is only one face of the coin of this “new” knowledge society and economy. In fact, many European countries, as well as Portugal, are dealing with multiple changes and transformations, readjusting their Universities to the new dynamics and demands the Bologna Reform requires. Those modifications are occurring in many spheres like curricula, teachers, students, institutional structures, policies and goals. This complex reality is obliging Universities to many changes and it is imperative to reflect about discourses and practices, what has been done and what needs to be made. Moreover, within this review of Portuguese context, related to a European background and policies, we ought to take into account the new publics that are entering the Universities (especially Non-Traditional Adult Students) and question the new responses these Institutions have to put into practice, also according with the Bologna Reform and Lifelong Learning demands. With this framework, our main purpose is to systematize and establish a theoretical dialogue between European and Portuguese documents, concerning Bologna Reforms and Lifelong Learning requests, so that we can observe and analyse a changeable paradigm concerning teaching and learning processes and their new requirements. In addition, we intend to divulge several data collected in a new investigation that has been started at the University of Aveiro, in which we analyse the case of Non-Traditional Adult Students of the academic year 2006-2007, according to demographic, professional, academic and motivational aspects. Indeed, Universities have to respond to several requests and put into practice several devices which allow Lifelong Learning to be a reality. Therefore, our study aims (i) to summarise Universities’ renewed agenda; (ii) to underline the changes in teachers’ and students’ profiles; (iii) to discuss how this last point has a great influence in the adjustments and modifications in teaching and learning methods; (iv) to reflect and examine possible strategies that would improve academic success and adjustment of Non-Traditional Adult Students, taking their own specificities into account, revelling some data collected from our investigation.

Method

- Systematization of theoretical Portuguese and European official documents and discourses, about Bologna Process and Reforms, and Lifelong Learning. - Characterization of Non-Traditional Adult Students of the academic year 2006-2007 at the University of Aveiro, and according to several other investigations and documents. Considering Non-Traditional Adult Students of University of Aveiro, we will analyse several data, related to demographic, academic, professional and motivational aspects, which will be collected from several informatics and paper supports. We will make a quantitative and qualitative analyses, so that we can reach accurate and reliable conclusions. - Examination of possible strategies that Universities ought to put into practice, according to the findings and data that we will collect and analyse at the University of Aveiro. This is a recent investigation and it is still in progress.

Expected Outcomes

The University needs to program several strategies to answer to the multiples requests of Non-Traditional Adult Students, so that they can achieve a proper adjustment in the University and good level of academic success. We are still working in our investigation, so that other conclusions and findings can only be divulged later.
