Contribution

This paper outlines and discusses the changes and evolutions in educational policies and discourses regarding citizenship education in England in the last decades, including a critical analysis of citizenship as a statutory national curriculum subject in England for pupils from ages 11 to 16 years, since 2002. Assuming a the need for a whole‐school approach to citizenship education, three case‐studies on secondary schools will be used to illustrate how social and emotional aspects of learning and relationships within the schools can serve as a vehicle to develop the necessary skills for citizenship.
