The demands for teachers’ work are increasing all the time. Although the initial teacher education would fulfil high quality standards it can not be sufficient as such over the teachers’ career lasting several decades.
The presentation looks at in-service training for teachers from comprehensive and upper secondary schools as well as the vocational and the liberal education in Finland. The questionnaire data for the evaluation project was collected in 2005 using a national sample (N=2047). Data for follow-up purposes were obtained from a survey conducted in 1998 (N=2653).
In 2005, among the comprehensive and upper secondary school teachers the rate of non-participation in in-service training was 13.6 %. Vocational teachers showed higher participation rates than their colleagues in the fields of general and liberal education. In any event the participation decreased in all types of schools between years 1998 and 2005. Only the amount of short-term training increased a little.
However the readiness for in-service education is recognized among the teachers and the needs for certain in-service education matters are increasing. In order to develop the in-service training of teaching staff there should be personal development plans that connect closely to the institutional and school-specific development plans.
