This paper opens with a brief overview and update on the second year of work of the Teacher Education Group (TEG). This work is a research capacity building initiative, grounded in teacher education, under the umbrella of phase 2 of the TLRP Capacity Building Programme in the UK. Following on from the TEG presentations at the ECER 2007 conference (Murray et al, 2007; Wall et al, 2007), for this 2008 Roundtable we present an initial analysis of the contents of the web-based resource database that lies at the heart of the project, identifying and discussing a range of emergent issues within it about professional development. This analysis also draws on recent and historical analyses of the contested place of research in teachers’ professional development (see, inter alia, Menter, Brisard and Smith, 2006; Furlong, 2007). The TEG database includes studies on the professional development of both school teachers and teacher educators, making the transition from teaching in the school sector to working in Higher Education. We present an initial analysis of the available studies, as identified in the mapping, on both of these (inter-related) groups of professionals. The analysis identifies and examines some of the implications for professional development in teacher education across the four jurisdictions within the UK. Finally, the paper identifies a number of perceived gaps in the literature on professional development in the UK and some broader areas of concern about research in the field of teacher education (Murray et al, in review).
