Contribution
The main purpose of the topic is to compare the countries according to their students’ mathematics achievements. We want to investigate the patterns of students’ answers to the mathematics test items for the students of a particular country or group of countries. It is an attempt not only to group countries according to their mathematics profile, but also to see whether their similarities with the particular group of countries remain throughout the years.
TIMSS (Trends in Mathematics and Science Study) 1995, 1999 and 2003 data is used for the analysis. Mathematics results of Grade 8 students of all participating countries in the survey are taken. Hierarchical cluster analysis and factor analysis are the main methods of the research.
The hypothesis investigated in the study is that countries remain organized in groups according to their mathematics results profile, but at the same time the mathematics profile of all participating countries in the survey becomes more similar to each other.
