What do we know about transitions in school life as critical incidents for young people? This question is focussed in the research project Young People Meet the Lower Secondary School, a longitudinal comparative case study of two school classes in Sweden, carried out with an interpretive approach and a relational interpretation perspective. In this paper some preliminary findings are presented, where the transition to the lower secondary school functions as an example of the phenomena. The analyses are mainly based on a data material (62 students, age-group 12-13), collected with qualitative research interviews, influenced by the life-history tradition. When young people with their different background, meet in the lower secondary school, to continue their individual school careers and as a collective forming a school class, there are differences concerning what happens in the two school classes as well as the role and importance of the transition for young people as individuals.
