Contribution

The perspectives on collaboration adopted in this study are a constructivist perspective combined with a socio-cultural perspective. Participants in the study were 56 students aged 15 or 16. The students worked in dyads on a concept mapping task that functioned as an introduction on a new course about electricity. A condition in which the students were provided with two textbooks was compared with a condition without the availability of textbooks. Changes in students' ability to use the electricity concepts were measured through a comparison of scores on an individual pre- and post-test. The discourse of the students was videotaped, transcripted and analysed. The analyses focused on the utterance and the episodic level, and on both the communicative and the propositional dimension. The use of the textbooks was described through categories. The study contributes to an understanding of the way students use textbooks during collaborative concept learning and of the way this textbook use can affect the amount of elaboration and co-construction in the student interaction.
